BICYCLE SAFETY HIGHWAY USERS INFORMATION REPORTPreface to the Web VersionJohn S. Allen, January 1, 2002 This Web version, prepared in 2001 and 2002 from multiple sources, is as definitive as I can make it. I thank co-author Bruce Burgess for lending me a pre-publication copy of the report, and of the questionnaire which was used in collecting much of the data. I thank the Florida Department of Transportation for providing a copy of the report as published by the Federal Highway Administration. Comparing the versionsUp through Appendix B, the FHWA version is a photocopy of the pre-publication copy. A few numbers and words have been interpolated in the FHWA version. Mostly, these are results of statistical analysis which apparently had not been completed when the pre-publication copy was typed up. Appendix C of the FHWA version contains the statistical analysis, and maps relating data to locations along the touring route. The questionnaire was not included in the FHWA version. Format of the Web versionI have processed the FHWA version's text up through Appendix B using optical character recognition. Appendix C contains large tables of numbers. Formatting and proofreading these would be time-consuming and too error-prone, so I have included Appendix C as fax-quality (100 dpi) page scans with cropped margins for quick downloading and viewing on a computer screen. I can provide 300-dpi scans to anyone who might wish to use optical character recognition, or reprint the pages. I have also included the questionnaire as page scans, because it uses graphics and because, as with any questionnaire, an examination of its formatting may help explain how respondents answered it. About the commentsI prepared comments on the study as I proofread it, and have placed them in a separate Web page. Links in the comments will take you to the parts of the report to which they refer. |
