This study has been accomplished with the cooperation of many individuals in many agencies. It was funded through the Environmental Protection Agency's Section 175 Air Quality program, which is administered by the Urban Mass Transportation Administration. The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles made the study possible by making available its microfilm of accident reports. Robert Carroll, William Wood and Paul Guerino were especially helpful in explaining the system and providing material.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Works provided print-outs of all accidents from which the sample was selected. John Hickey consistently displayed patience and cooperation in supplying us with listings that met the special needs of the study.

The volunteers who collected data in the six communities provided this insight into the bicycle accident report-keeping systems of local police departments. They devoted many hours, sometimes on evenings or the weekends, reviewing and recording the data. Charles Hyde-Wright, Betsy Edge, Enid Paul, David Brahmer, Louise Segal, Karen McLaughlin, J. Lynn Wolk and David Cain all made a contribution to the bicycling community in providing this service.

Sarah Heartt, John Allen, Charles Hyde-Wright and Webb Sussman of the Boston Area Bicycle Coalition (BABC), David Brahmer of the Charles River Wheelmen, Richard Norcross of the American Youth Hostels, and Cathy Buckley of the Central Transportation Planning Staff provided valuable input into the study, including recruiting volunteers, reviewing the methodology and findings, and suggesting countermeasures. We will ask their assistance in publicizing the results as well. BABC is also planning to plot the locations of all accidents occurring within the MAPC region during the study years to identify high-frequency locations.
