On ramp

|
The on ramp is separated from the travel lanes of this limited-access highway (Quebec Route 10, east of Montreal) by a double white line, then a dashed line. The two travel lanes are separated by lines allowing merging only from right to left. The apparent goal is to allow drivers to merge back onto the on ramp if they can not safely merge into the stream of through traffic, while preventing drivers in the inner lane from merging to the right and unexpectedly getting into the way of entering traffic. Not a bad idea. Once the double white line ends, the dashed line suggests that motorists in the middle lane may merge right, or more to the point, those merging left from the on ramp may a beat a retreat.
