Snowmobile speed limit
(Photo and caption by Jon Niehof) Back in March (the 13th, 2007) I was doing a loop up Cannon, over the Northeast Cannonball, and down past Lonesome Lake to Lafayette Campground. I needed to get up to the Kinsman Ridge trailhead (by the Cannon tramway), about 2 miles by the Pemi trail and 2.5 by the bike path. Biking the parkway would have been the best option, obviously, but I settled for walking. The Pemi trail wasn't broken out at all, whereas the bike path was hardpacked by snowmobiles. Given the choice between walking 2.5 miles barebooted on a packed surface or breaking trail in snowshoes for 2 miles, I took the bike path and kept an ear open for the snowmobiles. This photo was taken at 8:11 AM, just north of Lafayette Place campground--right after leaving the parking lot, looking north. Note the priorities: snowmobilers are permitted a higher speed limit than cyclists! (I imagine they don't have to get off and walk in the "bike walk areas", either.)
