The chute, panorama
The "chute" and underpass under the highway, just west of the old Route 3 bridge. (Scroll right as necessary to view the entire image.) This is probably the most hazardous location on the path. Imagine a family of casual cyclists with marginal brakes exiting the parking lot up the hill to the left. The path curves through a grove of trees so the long, 20% downgrade that follows is not visible until too late to avoid it. Then, under the bridge, a rocky embankment slopes down to the right. (The "break" in the image partway across the underside of the bridge is a perspective anomaly resulting from assembly of a panorama from multiple photos. In reality, all of the girders are parallel and the wall is flat. John Allen photo 2001, looking south.)
