This section of path leading down from the bridge connects with another path along the east bank of the Merrimack River, visible at the lower left. The fence is intended to prevent bicyclists from going down a steep slope, but it is a hazard here, as elsewhere. Providing the 2-foot clearance that AASHTO specifies would have been expensive, because the elevated area would have had to be widened.
