Chain Bridge

On June 3, 2004, I took a trip to Newburyport, Massachusetts to attend a public meeting and have a look at bridges. This is the Chain Bridge across the Merrimack river at the west end of Newburyport -- you may read its history. We are looking at the bridge from the south end. The travel lanes are narrow.
There is only one narrow sidewalk, on the east side. Note the placement of the guardrail behind the sidewalk -- common in Massachusetts and to be seen in other photos in this series including ones where space is not as tight.
