Shared space

This alley near the Transamerica Tower was the only example of a planned "shared space" street that I saw in San Francisco. On the other hand, a couple of alleys in Chinatown, lined with small shops, are crowded with people, while this one, facing the rear of three-story apartment buildings, is empty.
