Looking south
We look south along SE Lake Weir Rd. at its intersection with SE 22nd Rd. The street has undergone a complete reconstruction and apparently an attempt at a "complete street" has been made. It is a mistake as far as bicyclists are concerned. All of the added width of the street was used for alternating left-turn lanes and for wide sidewalks, also designated for bicycle use. The sidewalks cross numerous driveways. The high risk of car-bike collisions when bicycling on sidewalks has been demonstrated in one study after another. In an attempt to make the street safe for bicycling by children, it has been botched for cycling at an adult level of skill. For children and naive adults, it has been made into what in legal language is called an "attractive nuisance" -- in common language, a "Pied Piper" facility.
