Curbed median

Here, the curbed median prevents motorists from merging to keep a safe distance to the left of bicyclists riding on the road. At other locations, it is physically possible for motorists to merge into the turn lane or the striped median to overtake a bicyclist, though that would be illegal. Also, some motorists would object to bicyclists' using the roadway, the bicyclists' having been given their own special separate but equal space.
