“Escaping the rat race this summer doesn’t require four hours in an SUV
stuffed with backpacking gear. Several levels of wilderness experience are
within a few hours’ pedaling of San Francisco.”

Another Step Closer to Striping Bike Lanes

Last night the Board of Supervisors unanimously reaffirmed the Planning
Commission’s June 25th certification
for the 2009 Bicycle Plan ( http://e2ma.net/go/6504128529/208003477/208135004/22494/goto:http://sfbike.org/?bikeplan
), denying appeals brought by two parties last month. This decision means that
the SF City Attorney
can now return to the Superior Court and request a lifting of the
3-year-old BIke Plan Injunction.

Big thanks to SFBC members and other citizens who came out to testify to
the fullness and adequacy of the Bike Plan’s
environmental review — another key obstacle has been cleared and we’re
another step closer to striping
other exciting projects of the Bike Plan, like colored bike lanes and
on-street bike parking. Keep up-to-date on the latest

Sunday Streets is heading west this Sunday

Come on out to play this Sunday, August 9 at the fifth Sunday Streets ( http://e2ma.net/go/6504128529/208003477/208134991/22494/goto:http://sundaystreetssf.com/

) and youth biking. We hope to see you there enjoying the car-free fun, make
sure to stop by our orange tent and say hello.

A Brief Affair With Bike Share

San Franciscans got a little taste of modern bike share technology this
past Sunday when Montreal-based Bixi ( http://e2ma.net/go/6504128529/208003477/208134987/22494/goto:http://montreal.bixi.com/
) stopped by car-free Golden Gate Park
to show off their bike-share system and docking stations. Bike sharing ( http://e2ma.net/go/6504128529/208003477/208134986/22494/goto:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_sharing_system
) has been
a huge success in Paris (the 20,000-bike Ve’lib system is celebrating its
second birthday) and systems in Barcelona, Lyon, Stockholm, and elsewhere are
getting lots of attention and putting
millions of new bike trips on city streets around the world. Bixi’s visit
was part of a West Coast tour to show off their brand-new system and coordinated
by the SF Municipal Transportation Agency and City Carshare.

The SFBC was excited to test out the system and is eager to see a serious
and full-scale bike sharing system begin here in San Francisco as soon as
possible. More about Sunday’s showcase at SF Streetsblog ( http://e2ma.net/go/6504128529/208003477/208134985/22494/goto:http://sf.streetsblog.org/2009/08/03/bixi-bicycle-share-demonstration-in-golden-gate-park/
), SF Chronicle ( http://e2ma.net/go/6504128529/208003477/208134984/22494/goto:http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/08/03/BAH51931I4.DTL
) and KCBS Radio.

SFBC’s Bike-In Movie was RAD

Thanks to the Good Hotel and everyone who made the SFBC’s debut Bike-In
Movie great. More than 200 people helped transform an ordinary parking lot into
a magical movie theater under a soft blanket of fog. Attendees were treated
to a rare screening of the 80’s cult classic Rad and an array of
delicious culinary choices thanks to San Francisco’s greatest street food
vendors. Our amazing bike valet crew parked 150 bikes.
Don’t miss
the SFBC’s next Bike-In Movie August 19 when we screen the acclaimed
documentary Klunkerz ( http://e2ma.net/go/6504128529/208003477/208134979/22494/goto:http://klunkerz.com
),
a great film about the birth of the mountain bike movement here in the Bay
Area. After the movie, mountain bike legend Gary Fisher will host a question
and answer session. For more information about the film go to: klunkerz.com

Bicycles and The Post-Carbon City
Join Leah Shahum, SFBC Executive Director, for a SPUR evening symposium and
panel discussion about Eco-Urbanism titled “The Post-Carbon City: Planning for
Abundance in an Era of Dwindling Resources.” Eco-Urbanism is a movement that
emphasizes sustainability,
as planners promote green buildings, “closed-loop” architecture and
neighborhood planning, and seek to build robust transit systems (including
bicycle infrastructure)
that can play a role in reducing emissions. Panelists include Carl Anthony,
founder of Urban
Habitat; Jeff Tumlin of NelsonNygaard; Leah Shahum, executive director of
the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition; Harrison Fraker,
former dean of UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design; and
exhibition curator Benjamin Grant. Sponsored by SPUR. Info at: spur.org ( http://e2ma.net/go/6504128529/208003477/208134977/22494/goto:http://www.spur.org/events/calendar/postcarbon_city_planning_abundance_era_dwindling_resources
)

Details: Tuesday Aug. 11 from 6-7:30pm at SPUR Urban Center, 654 Mission
Street (between Third and New Montgomery). Free for SPUR members
and $5 for the general public.

Help the Great Streets Project: Street Surveyors Needed
Be a part of San Francisco’s street reclamation movement! We’re helping to
gather baseline data on how the spaces for the next Pavement to Parks sites ( http://e2ma.net/go/6504128529/208003477/208134976/22494/goto:http://sfpavementtoparks.sfplanning.org/%23upcoming
). Showplace Triangle at 16th St. and 8th St., is currently being used. We will
be collecting pedestrian counts, bicyclist counts, time lapse photography of the
space (to see how it’s being used), and surveys of people on the street about
their perception of the area.

We need volunteers to help on two days, during both the day and
night:

Wed., August 12th (noon to 2pm, 5-6pm)

Sat., August 15th (noon to 2pm, 5-6pm)

Sign up to volunteer during one or more of these shifts!
