I have already described the side skirts on Boston garbage trucks as window dressing. Maybe I should concede a little ground on that, as the cyclist in the most recent right-hook crash merely had severe injuries instead of being killed. [Update, December 2024: I take it back. [Update, December 28, 2024: What i hadn’t noticed before is that the photo below, by the Boston Fire Department, and used in a Boston Globe article [archived], shows the front end of the truck elevated and medical supplies next to the front wheel. What may be the bicycle is just behind it. The cyclist went under the front of the truck. The side guards aren’t there. ]
