The buffer area where the truck is parked is apparently intended to improve sight conditions for motorists approaching on Grand Street, so they can see pedestrians in the crosswalk at Mulberry Street.
Steve Faust: this buffer zone would help with visibility, but it may also have been installed expecting to be used for quick pickup and dropoffs. If there were NO place to pull in, trucks might just stop in the main traffic lane and dam anyone behind them, as the buses do. There are a few places to pull in, like at the office building back west, and be out of both the car and bike lanes. Cyclists have to be cautious at corners regardless of the lane they are riding in - trucks turn from all corners.
