Steerer tube
We look upward into the bottom of the steerer tube. The thin rust-colored line is the broken surface of the steel sleeve. Inside it is the broken surface of the carbon-fiber steerer tube. The protruding tube at the left apparently was intended as reinforcement and as a safety measure -- it encircled the brake bolt, and would have kept the fork from coming apart except that it was too weak to prevent failure once the main body of the steerer gave way.
