Split aluminum rim

This aluminum alloy rim split at the seam, after having been worn by the brake shoes. The split here reflects stress due to compression at the seam, and an initial slight misalignment at the seam which left the rim sidewall thinner there once worn. This was my own wheel. It signaled the problem by rubbing against a brake shoe. After reducing pressure in the tire to avoid its blowing out, I managed to ride the 5 miles home. This was a rear wheel or I wouldn't have risked the ride.
