Bike lane plan

One purpose of my trip was to attend a meeting about a plan to improve Plum Island Turnpike. The Turnpike carries considerable bicycle traffic as well as motor traffic to and from Plum Island, part of which is the Sandy Point State Reservation, an important bird-nesting location and destination for birders. Motor-vehicle parking at the Reservation is very restricted, increasing the incentive for bicycle use. The image below is of a map from what was described as a "bikelane project", but the most important improvement was widening, shown in three sections between brackets on the map. The Turnpike already had adequate width in other parts; designation of the shoulders as bike lanes makes little practical difference in how the roadway is used, other than to discourage parking. As I recall, the widening was somewhat controversial due to the wetland taking it required. The grid deck on the bridge was not made safer.
