Two-way shoulder

But there's another issue with this stretch. Where is the boundary between the road shoulder and the path? As they were constructed, it is where the pavement color changes, not even marked by a painted stripe. So, as a matter of traffic law, there is no boundary, and this arrangement requires westbound bicyclists to ride opposite the direction of traffic, in violation of the traffic law. Notice that the bicyclist riding away from the camera is keeping to the left. That is tempting because of the high closing speed with eastbound motor traffic. AASHTO guidelines require a 5-foot separation or a physical barrier between a path and a road. Photo taken in 2001.
