Here access to the trail is barred by a locked gate. Access here is to what appears to be a public street -- certainly, not one with a gated entrance. Still, the sign reads "Private Property Keep Out". More often, adjacent streets run parallel to the trail, with only residents' back yards facing the trail. There are miles of fence along the trail with locked gates so individual homeowners can access the trail -- but nobody else can, preventing access not only to the trail, but also across the trail. The housing foreclosure crisis of 2009 might offer an answer to this problem, with the possibility of a community's buying up a house or empty lot at a low price to install a connector across the property. If the lot is large enough, the house might still also be left standing and offered for resale. (Thanks to Keri Caffrey, a Florida resident, for this idea!)
