This is the eastbound sidewalk of the Hawthorne bridge. The markings on the pavement indicate that bicyclists are supposed to keep closer to the roadway, and pedestrians, closer to the railing. One justification for this is shown in this photo, the entrance from a stairway, at the right; a bicyclist traveling rapidly past this location could strike a pedestrian coming up the stairs. Overtaking on the right is contrary to usual practice in the USa, but there is not enough room to the left of the designated bicyclists' line of travel that another bicyclist could overtake safely. And, erratic behavior of pedestrians and other bicyclists could deflect a bicyclist down the 12-inch curb to the grid deck, in front of motor traffic, with little hope to keep the rubber side down. A more detailed description of conditions when bicycling eastbound across the bridge is available in | |
