Bike box

|
This bike box, at SW Broadway and Clay Street, is at the bottom of a steep downgrade. Bicyclists are invited to swerve across in front of motor vehicles to wait for the traffic signal, only they have no warning as to when the traffic signal is going to change. Also, all motorists are directed to keep to the left of the bike lane even though there is room for right turns to be made from its right -- as long as no vehicles are parked in those parking spaces, which extend right up to the crosswalk! Also note the left lane. As is usual in Portland, there is no advanced stop line before the crosswalk except when there is a bike box. The bike box is intended only for through bicycle traffic, as both streets are one-way.
