Shared space

This is Portland's one-block experiment with a "shared space" street, Davis Street between 3rd and 4th NW. There are no curbs, but instead, large planters marking the ends of the parking lanes. The planters work like 2-foot-high bulbouts, except that you can scrape them with a car door rather than only a tire sidewall. The entire block is paved European-style with trendy block pavers. People walk more or less indiscriminately everywhere, and drive very slowly. Essentially, this is pedestrian space. Bicyclists and motorists must travel at pedestrian speeds to avoid colliding with pedestrians.
