The inch-pitch rear sprocket on this side of the hub has 9 teeth, for a 77-inch gear (6.1 meters development). The quick-release handle is on this side because there's no sense reversing the quick release when turning the wheel over to use the sprocket on the other side, and there is no derailleur to get in the way. Note the forward-facing dropouts and derailleur hanger -- this is a road bike with a fixed gear, not a track bike.
