A. M. Stewart biographical materials
These photos of A. M. Stewart are scanned from Kodachrome prints in the Stewart
collection at St. John Fisher College. These prints are from Kodachrome slides. All of the
prints reproduced here are on identical 4 x 6 inch Kodachrome paper with a stippled
surface. Descreening was necessary during scanning to reduce the tendency of the stippling
to produce moiré patterns and loss of contrast, resulting in some loss of sharpness. In
any case, any copy is bound to be less sharp than the original. If the original slides
could be located, larger scans would be possible without loss of sharpness. It is also
likely that the contrast range would be wider. The photos appear to be intended as an appreciation of AMS's archaeological, historical and educational work. Some locations have been identified by John S. Allen based on the appearances of monuments which are illustrated elsewhere -- particularly, on the Map of the Seneca Villages. Dates can be roughly identified by the season, and by Stewart's car. Until 1955, he had a dark blue Nash; then he had a green 1954 Dodge. The photo of AMS in the woods was also present in the collection as a Kodachrome slide. This is labeled "319 Bob Graham, May 1955". There are many other slides taken by Graham in the collection, most of which are of archaeological artifacts. It is probable, then, that the other photos here were taken by Graham, though some may have been taken by other companions on the trips they document and Graham himself is in one of them. |
AMS and priest at Victor monument
(Note the Nash car in the background).
Also at the Victor monument. Who is the priest?
Also winter but a different day (different coat) --
AMS in front of unidentified house probably in Rochester.
A photo in a commemorative album is identified as in
interior of 12 Lehigh Ave., and the street
number on the house appears to be 12.
AMS in parsonage [?] -- perhaps the house in photo above.
Different day (white shirt)
AMS making a phone call, possibly in the same house --
though not the same wallpaper.
Different day (different clothes).
AMS and the Nash.
The mound in the background
may be an Iroqouis village site.
Following several photos
were taken on the same day
(same time of year, same car, same clothing).

AMS, roadside picnic
Next several photos are from the warm months of 1955
or later; the car is AMS's 1954 Dodge.
AMS is talking with people who are apparently students
(judging by books and age) in front of his home
at 30 Audubon Street, Rochester, NY.
AMS and Bob Graham.
This photo records AMS blinking.
His blinking amounted to a
facial tic in his old age.
He is holding what appears to be a
medal in its case in his left hand.

AMS in the woods, probably at an archaeological site, May 1955.
