The Stewarts of Dwight, part 1: Dwight
The pages reproduced here are those contained in one of the three looseleaf
binders of preliminary versions of The Stewarts of Dwight. As these drafts were
typed to the same standard as the final version, and included many photographs, it is
clear that Harold Stewart intended them as the final version, but then decided to rewrite
and condense the material. In many places, the draft version is more detailed -- see for
example, the description of the Alderside fireplace. Comparisons between the versions are
illustrative of Harold Stewart's way of working. Many of the photographs were removed from
the draft version for use in the final one, but others remained, including some very
interesting ones. Desktop publishing now makes it possible to make the photographs perform
double duty. -- JSA |
