Another photo of the seven siblings, in
which they
appear to be a year or so older. This photo
was taken outside their home at 21 Atkinson

Note verandah posts identical to those of Alderside (probably a standard design
-- corners chamfered to avoid splinters). Also, ladder on the roof, probably fort chimney
sweeping; baseball bat and oar propped against front of building, axe leaning against
fence left of gate. What store these days would have a hammock on the verandah?
Hurrah, in for a swim! Boys diving, 1895.
This photo, probably by James Arnold or Joseph L. Humphrey,
tests the limits in photographic technique.
Action photography was only barely possible
with the slow films of the time.

Caption from the margin of
photo found in Harold S. Stewart's collection
Neither Neptune nor Mercury is the planet they saw. Both are
dim, and Mercury is only visible for a short time after sunrise or before sunset. While
HSS may have been an expert on getting to Heaven, he was no expert on what is there! In keeping with family loyalty and with his calling, Harold Stewart takes some pains to avoid saying anything unkind about Ruth. His view of Ruth was shared by his son Gordon, one of the children who participated in the events described in stories told here - stories he liked to retell himself. Others among her step-grandchildren regarded her as imperious and unpleasant and would consider the description here as sugar-coated! |

In the interest of readers' being able to know the author's strengths and weaknesses alike, I have chosen not to censor this, offensive as this is -- JSA. |
Identifications for the House Party
photo
from Alexander M. Stewart's family album;
Arthur and Hugh identified by John S. Allen.
The identification of the young woman at left
as Aunt Augusta Stewart is consistent with
Arthur Stewart's record of Alderside guests
and his note that Josephine was
wisiting friends near Montréal in the
summer of 1895.
