p11c Around fireplace.jpg (124045 bytes)

Date of photo is ca. 1895, judging by age of children.
The original is a cyanotype print apparently from a glass plate.

Back row: Mary McGinn Stewart, Miss Kate Andrews(?), Alex, Harold, Josephine (?)
Middle row: Hugh or Arthur, Fred, Aunt Augusta Stewart (?), Norman.
Front row, back to camera: J. W. A. (?)

As a photographer, I am intrigued with how this photo was achieved.
Illumination by firelight was out of the question, given the low sensitivity of 1890's emulsions.
The light source was sunlight reflected down the chimney from a mirror, or an
incendiary such as magnesium in the fireplace.
Note the hangings covering the windows to exclude daylight, which still filters through some of them..
The photographer was possibly Alderside guest James Arnold, an accomplished photographer.
Unfortunately, nobody survives to confirm these speculations! -- JSA.
