The original is a cyanotype print apparently from a glass plate.

As a photographer, I am intrigued with how this photo was achieved.
Illumination by firelight was out of the question, given the low sensitivity of 1890's
emulsions.
The light source was sunlight reflected down the chimney from a mirror, or an
incendiary such as magnesium in the fireplace.
Note the hangings covering the windows to exclude daylight, which still filters through
some of them..
The photographer was possibly Alderside guest James Arnold, an accomplished
photographer.
Unfortunately, nobody survives to confirm these speculations! -- JSA.
