Cello duet during service at Unitarian Fellowship of Delaware County,
Pennsylvania.
My father had played trombone professionally in the 1930's in a
touring jazz orchestra, but could not improvise and decided he
did not like the trombone in any case. He quit his musical
career to study social work.
His cello was a plywood Kay which he had purchased
through the PX while in the Army during World War II.
Mine was a 3/4 size rental instrument from the Springfield public schools.
I had then been playing cello for 2 months. The spiritual uplift
of this playing had to be imagined (rather than absorbed). This can
be proven, as a home recording survives of one of our duet
performances, accompanied by the crying of younger brother Jim -- JSA.
