In this stretch of the Rue Berri, with a rather steep grade, the sidepath is routed toward the camera on the narrow sidewalk at the left, and away from the camera on the shoulder of the street between the curb (yellow line) and posts. The narrow sidewalk reduces safety in riding fast down the hill as compared with riding in the street. In either direction, there is no crossing over the curb to overtake a slower bicyclist. The bicyclist in the foreground of this photo is using the shoulder as intended, traveling on the left side of the roadway facing motor traffic. At night, he would be headed directly into the glare of low-beam headlamps. That might make it harder to avoid the curb, posts, drain covers and trash.
