Road marking

Portland places these small circular markings on the pavement to identify bicycle-boulevard routes. These markings are reminiscent of the Dan Henry arrows used by bicycle clubs to mark routes of recreational rides. Bike clubs consistently place two arrows before every turn on the route and one after. It is then possible to follow a route without using a map. This works quite well, though the participants on the club ride may have no idea at the end of the ride where they have been! Portland's markings help bicyclists know that they are on a bicycle boulevard, though the markings are not used consistently enough to indicate bicyclists' every turn. Portland also does not use different markings for different routes, as bike clubs do. Bicyclists must therefore also look at Portland's bike route signs or check a map when learning the bicycle-boulevard routes.
