Here's what: there is a stop sign for SE 41st Street and a traffic signal for SE Hawthorne Boulevard. A half-signalized intersection is highly unusual. There is a "walk/don't walk" signal for pedestrians, but motorists and bicyclists may, it seems, cross Hawthorne Boulevard against the green light after stopping for the stop sign. There may be confusion when drivers seeing a green light ahead of them assume that cross traffic is prohibited.
To turn the traffic signal or Hawthorne boulevard red, bicyclists on 41st Street must press a pushbutton mounted under the stop sign at the curb, where they stand to the right of right-turning traffic.
Pedestrians have another pushbutton, on the pole closer to the corner.
