Approaching rotary intersection (image 15 of 17)
Placing a bike lane to the right of an entrance to a rotary intersection is a nonstandard treatment, because bicyclists are placed at a right angle to the stream of traffic leaving the rotary at the next exit, rather than merging into the stream of traffic. An alternative for bicyclists who are not confident to merge into the stream of traffic is to walk in crosswalks. However, there are no crosswalks at the right side of this rotary. For a look at conditions elsewhere in this rotary, see this page. Bicyclists who choose not ro ride in the rotary would have either to
* detour one block to the right, where there is an overpass over Memorial Drive, or
* use a series of seven crosswalks starting with the one shown in the picture, to go around the rotary clockwise and reach the right side of the Boston University Bridge at the far side of the rotary.
