False one-way street

Kat Iverson shows me where a bicycle boulevard on SE Clinton Street crosses SE 39th Avenue at a signalized intersection. Bicyclists like the one at the left side of the picture may cross 39th Avenue and continue on Clinton Street. But for motorists, the treatment creates what is called a "false one-way street". Motor traffic in both directions is permitted on Clinton street, but may only exit to 39th Avenue. Unusually, the bike lane in which Kat is standing starts shortly before the intersection rather than being discontinued before the intersection. As is common in Portland, motorists are expected to look behind themselves and to the right for bicyclists while also paying attention to traffic in the intersection ahead. In addition, at this intersection, with a "bike box", bicyclists are directed to swerve left in front of the waiting motorists. There is no pre-green signal interval to warn bicyclists when motor traffic is about to enter the bike box, as at advanced stop lines in the United Kingdom.
